DAVIE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- In Mocksville, a tight-knit community is rallying around one of their own after a sledding accident after Friday's snowstorm. It happened Saturday and left two children hurt after they hit a tree and went down an embankment. One is still in the hospital, while the other is recovering at home.   “This happened in seconds,” said Jordan Abendroth, a friend of the Huggins family. A group of moms went from mom mode to nurse mode when both the Huggins children were injured in a sledding accident. “We began triaging injuries. Obviously, the next step at that point because we weren’t sure if there were spinal cord injuries or anything like that was to call 911,” Abendroth said.  A fun sledding day turned into a medical emergency. “Unfortunately, the sled lost control and hit a tree and an embankment,” Abendroth said. 5-year-old Jaxon and 15-year-old Lexi have severe injuries.  “He broke both legs, one being a femur, he lacerated his spleen, he fractured his hip and fractured a couple of ribs. Lexi is home. She was discharged the same day from the hospital ... She is in a brace and crutches,” Abendroth said. The family is trying to stay positive. “Kids are resilient. It’s bad that it’s happened ... but the silver lining is that kids are resilient,” said Brita McIlwain, a friend of the Huggins family. Now the road to recovery begins. The Huggins family has a lot of support. Their friend group and their community are stepping up in a big way to help them during their time of need.  “Our husbands wanted to also do something, and so they made a ramp because Jaxon will need a wheelchair coming home,” Abendroth said. A GoFundMe has also been set up. “It’s going to help out with a lot of the medical expenses and surgery costs. What insurance won’t cover after deductible with durable medical equipment. We’re hoping for meals. It can help them with that,” McIlwain said. Jaxon will be turning 6 years old next week, so everyone is hopeful he can be discharged from the hospital by then to celebrate his birthday at home.
