SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Two teenage girls were arrested in connection with a stolen Kia found in Springfield.
At around 3:45 a.m. on Friday, officers observed a Kia that had a broken window and the ignition tampered within the area of Dwight and Worthington Streets, the Springfield Police Department states. A review of video from the Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center showed the alleged suspects on the 500 block of Worthington.

Police located one of the suspects, a 14-year-old girl near the intersection of Alert Street and Worthington Street, and the second suspect, a 16-year-old girl, at Alert Street and Taylor Street. A screwdriver and key fob were recovered.
The police contacted the vehicle's owner, who did not realize it had been stolen. Both girls were arrested. The Springfield Police Department does not release the identity or charges of anyone under the age of 18.
This serves as a reminder to never leave your car running unattended, and lock your vehicles even if they are in your driveway. Remove any valuables from your car, along with the keys or key fob, since the thieves are targeting unlocked vehicles and the vehicles that are running.
Hyundai and Kia released a software upgrade in February 2023 that prevents vehicles from starting without the owner’s key or an identical copy. Hyundai and Kia also gave out window stickers aimed at deterring potential thieves after a spike in thefts due in part to social media videos.
