INDIANAPOLIS -- A bill has been introduced that would authorize Indiana school corporations to deny enrollment to undocumented students. House Bill 1394, which was authored by State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-District 69), stipulates that school corporations can decline the enrollment of an immigrant student if the corporation can provide documented evidence that the child is in the United States without legal status. Under the current version of the proposed bill, the attorney general would be obligated to defend the school corporation in the event that any legal action is leveled against it "for denying an immigrant student enrollment." The bill would also require school corporations to provide an annual report documenting immigrant students it believes are undocumented. The bill received its first reading on Jan. 13 in the House Committee on Education. The entire bill can be read here.
