Drake is officially taking legal action against his record label, Universal Music Group, for allowing Kendrick Lamar, who is signed under another branch of UMG, to release his single ‘Not Like Us’ which famously suggests Drake is a pedophile.   In November, Drake originally accused UMG of working with Spotify to artificially inflate Lamar’s streams. However, the Canadian has since dropped legal action against Spotify, and is now solely focusing on the record label.   The lawsuit states that UMG “approved, published and launched a campaign to create a viral hit out of a rap track” which was “intended to convey the specific, unmistakable and false factual allegation that Drake is a criminal pedophile, and to suggest that the public should resort to vigilante justice in response.”   Kendrick Lamar himself is not included in this case.   “This lawsuit is not about the artist who created ‘Not Like Us,’” – “It is, instead, entirely about UMG, the music company that decided to publish, promote, exploit, and monetize allegations that it understood were not only false, but dangerous.”   ‘Not Like Us’ was one of the biggest hits of 2024, spending two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and 20 weeks at #1 on the Hot rap songs chart. The diss track is also nominated for FIVE Grammys, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.   (The Hollywood Reporter)
