Los gehts! Colts to host 2025 regular season game in Berlin
Jan 15, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Colts will host a regular season game at Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany, during the 2025 season, the NFL announced Wednesday.
The date, time, and opponent will be revealed this spring as part of the League’s full schedule announcement.
This will be the Colts’ second regular-season game in the country and their first since launching an effort to grow their presence in Germany and Austria through the NFL’s Global Markets Program.
“The NFL is making history in Berlin, and the Colts are proud to be part of this landmark event in one of the world’s most historic cities,” Colts Owner and CEO Jim Irsay said. “The NFL has become a global brand, and we’re looking forward to growing American football in Germany and expanding Colts Nation’s footprint around the world.”
The Colts also have the distinction of being the first team in the league to play multiple regular-season games in Germany. The team raveled to Frankfurt to take on the New England Patriots in Week 10 of the 2023 season. They returned to Indianapolis with a 10-6 victory.
Current Colts tackle Bernhard Reimann, a native of Steinbrunn, Austria, made the trip to Frankfurt in November 2023.
Before the game, Raimann told News 8: “When they first announced it, I was over the moon excited. A couple family members, like my grandma, might have never traveled over to the U.S. It’s a long flight once you get older. For her to be able to come to a game, it’s an unbelievable chance for…my family. I’m just beyond excited about it.”
Colts safety Marcel Dabo is from Reutlingen, Germany. Former Colts linebacker and first round draft pick Björn Werner hails from Berlin and is the official “Colts Ambassador” in Germany and Austria.
“It was great to see the Colts go 1-0 on my home turf in Germany in 2023,” Werner said. “Now, hosting a game in the historic Olympic Stadium in Berlin is the next big step. I’m pumped to see how we can keep growing the game, not just in Germany and Austria, but all over Europe. Let’s go 2-0!”
For the trip to Berlin, the Colts will trade the familiar confines of Lucas Oil Stadium for the 89-year-old Olympic Stadium (or “Olympiastadion” in German). The stadium, built for the 1936 Summer Olympics, is where Jesse Owens won four gold medals in track and field and helped dispel Adolf Hitler’s idea of Aryan supremacy. Today, the stadium is still a popular venue for sporting events, hosting six games in Euro 2024.
