SCAN renamed Iris Family Support Center

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – SCAN celebrates 50 years of family support with a name change on Wednesday.
The non-profit will now be known as Iris Family Support Center, a title which its Board of Directors believe encapsulates all services the agency provides to children and families.
According to the press release, organizers said they made the switch away from SCAN, or Stop Abuse and Child Neglect, because the previous name made families hesitant to reach out before a crisis occurred.
“For years, we have heard from the community that they are nervous to walk through a door labeled ‘Abuse and Neglect,’” SCAN CEO Dee Szyndrowski said.
The change to Iris Family Support Center aims to "create a more welcoming space" for its clients as they work through their family crises.
Board Chair Katie Bergman Miller said beyond sharing the organization's signature purple color, the flower also represents courage, hope and wisdom clients and staff embody.
"It’s a symbol of the clarity and insight we bring to challenging circumstances—and the transformative growth that happens when we tend to each other’s needs with care and compassion,” Bergman Miller said.
Iris Family Support Center provides services to children and families who are victims or at-risk of child abuse and neglect. The organization serves 41 Indiana counties with 45,000 people.
The center is located on 500 W. Main St. To receive the full list of services Iris Family Support Center, visit the non-profit's website.
