(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police (CSPD) and Fire Department (CSFD) responded to a U.S. Post Office on Wednesday, Jan. 15 due to a yellow powder that irritated a postal employee's skin.
A around 6:56 a.m. on Wednesday, CSFD and CSPD responded to a U.S. Post Office located in the 1500 block of South 8th Street, near Cheyenne Boulevard, after they received a call for service.
According to CSPD, a postal employee had been moving a box when he heard a hissing sound from within the box. Then, a yellow powder came out of the box and irritated the employee's skin.
The building was evacuated while CSFD Hazmat examined the box and its contents.
The hazmat crew determined the substance was a medical or food-grade powder; officers also researched where the package was scheduled to be delivered and contacted the residents who said they had ordered a fire extinguisher through an online vendor.
CSPD said it appeared like the fire extinguisher deployed some of its content during transport.
The scene was deemed safe by CSFD and all personnel were cleared to resume their daily activities by around 8 a.m.
