BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day is recognized every third Monday in January.
The federal holiday honors American activist Martin Luther King Jr. There are many ways the day is celebrated, including volunteering, community events, fundraising and educational sessions.

MLK Fest Baton Rouge
What: Volunteer for this blight cleanup event in Baton Rouge. On MLK Day, the Walls Project will host a block party and resource fair. Click here to learn more or sign up.

Million Meals for MLK
What: Volunteer Louisiana and Feeding Louisiana will have an event to pack 1 million meals statewide. Click here to sign up to volunteer.

Knock Knock Children's Museum
What: This local children's museum will have its annual "I Have a Dream Day" featuring special activities.
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20.
Where: 1900 Dalrymple Drive, Baton Rouge.
MLK Legacy Day
What: LSU students, staff and community members get together for a day of service. Volunteers will be assigned service projects when they check-in. This event will be limited to 150 people. Click here to register.

Where: LSU Student Union, Magnolia Room.
The Red Shoes MLK Day of Service
What: Local group The Red Shoes invites people for a day of outreach. Volunteer opportunities include making sandwiches for a community fridge, donations of items like clothing, toys and home goods and preparing warm meals for neighbors. Click here to RSVP.

MLK Unity Celebration
What: LSU, Southern University and Baton Rouge Community College join together to honor and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
