Sundance bookings remain intact amid wildfires, Park City lodging industry figure says
Jan 15, 2025
One of Park City’s prominent property-management firms on Monday indicated it had not received cancellations of bookings for stays during the Sundance Film Festival as a result of the wildfires in Southern California.Rhonda Sideris, the founder and president of Park City Lodging, said in an interview the bookings for Sundance by early in the week remained largely consistent with what had been expected prior to the fires. Although Sideris represents just one firm, Park City Lodging dates to the mid-1980s and she has long been considered to have deep knowledge of trends in the local industry. It could be an early indication the disaster may not significantly impact Sundance attendance later in January. Broader information from the Park City Chamber/Bureau and the Park City Area Lodging Association, though, was not immediately available.Sundance is scheduled to open Jan. 23 and run for 11 days. It is an important period for the lodging industry, when room rates and occupancy are usually some of the highest of the year. Lodging during the celebrity-heavy opening days of the festival is typically the tightest as the corporate and media presence reaches its height.California is, by a wide margin, the main state of residence of Sundance visitors who arrive in Park City from outside of Utah. Many of the Californians who attend the festival have ties to the entertainment industry and travel from the Los Angeles area.An economic report conducted on behalf of festival organizers after the 2024 event showed 34.5% of the non-Utahns at Sundance came from California, more than triple any other state. The report found that people from outside of Utah spent $38.7 million on lodging, the top spending category. Non-Utahns spent an average of $1,603 on lodging during Sundance, or an average of $262 per day.The Sundance visitors traditionally stay in the full spectrum of accommodations across the Park City area, from high-end hotels on the slopes to rooms in residences found in online classifieds.Sideris said Park City Lodging has experienced an uptick in bookings unrelated to Sundance from California residents that started last weekend, as well as extensions of stays. She said the reservations involved stays of between three and seven nights, a period that would not have covered any of the days of Sundance. Some of the bookings were made on the arrival date itself. “Because they needed to get out of the fires,” she said.Sideris said she did not expect the wildfire-related bookings and said Park City Lodging offered discounts for people who made reservations on the same day of their arrival. An online search Tuesday for accommodations in the Park City area from Jan. 23 until Jan. 27 showed availability at all levels of hotels, with top prices pushing $8,000 per night. An Airbnb search showed a series of listings topping $1,000 per night for the same dates. The post Sundance bookings remain intact amid wildfires, Park City lodging industry figure says appeared first on Park Record.
