ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Richard Pitino's UNM men's basketball team followed up a big nationally televised win against San Diego State with their first conference loss. San Jose State upset New Mexico Tuesday night 71-70.
Latrell Davis put back shot with under three seconds left in the game was the difference. The Lobos started Mountain West play with a home victory over San Jose State back in December only to have the Spartans return the favor at their place. Only two Lobos scored in double figures in the UNM loss. Nelly Junior Joseph, who got into foul trouble in the game, led the Lobos in scoring with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Donovan Dent scored 16 points and remains the only player in the nation to have at least 10 points and 4 assists in every game this season.
The Spartans had five players in double figures led by Robert Viahola's 18. He also had 9 rebounds. Davis, who had the game winning shot, scored 11 points. With the loss the Lobos dropped to 14-4 on the season and 6-1 in the Mountain West.
The Lobos will return to the home court Friday when they host Boise State. San Jose State is on the road at Nevada Saturday where they will try to win a third straight league game. The Spartans are 2-5 in conference.
