SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- In a swift and unanimous vote, the County Board of Supervisors has agreed to a special election to fill the vacancy left behind by Nora Vargas. The board decided Tuesday between three options, appointing someone, holding a special election, and the final option was a combination of the two. With Board Chair Nora Vargas ending her term, here’s who’s vying to replace her “You shouldn’t be the ones determining and disenfranchising District 1 by installing somebody that you guy's prefer,” said one woman who stood up to voice her comments.  “The people should be represented by somebody who they want.” The unanimous decision serves as a relief for some District 1 residents who are ready to have their votes count. Vargas decides to step away from San Diego County Board of Supervisors “This was perfect. This was exactly what I wanted to come down here today to hear,” said District 1 resident Danyrea Megginson. “To hear a unanimous vote to give the people the power back.”   The board clearly noted the high costs that will come with a special election. “When Fletcher resigned, the election expense was 5 million dollars. It’s probably going to be the  same or more this time around,” said Supervisor Jim Desmond. “I agree it is very unfortunate the cost of this to our county, especially given our current fiscal environment,” added Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer.  “I think it’s a huge blow, but ultimately the price of democracy is invaluable.”
