Freshman sets New Mexico high school threepoint record

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Springer High School has once again set a new three-point record. Pablo Romero is the latest to put his name in history after connecting on 16 three-point attempts.
During the Red Devils game against Reserve, the freshman went 16-21 (76%) from beyond the arc and finished with a career high of 48 points. His previous career high was 23.
Romero caught fire in the third quarter. After only recording six points in the first half, the freshman exploded for 11 threes in the third quarter. His 33 points in a single quarter is also a new state record.
"After I hit two in a row in the third quarter I kind of just kept shooting and everything was going in for me," said Romero.
"This kid just couldn't miss," Springer head coach Johnny Chavez said. "I just said keep shooting, keep shooting. I think he hit 11 straight in that third quarter before he finally missed one. It was pretty fun to watch . I don't ever think I've seen a kid get on a heater like that to where everything that he threw up just went in."
With the new record, Romero joins some elite company that includes his older brother and his assistant coach. The previous single game record (15) was set by his brother, Estevan Romero, in 2016. Before that, Isaiah DeHerrera held the title with a 14-point outing in 2009. DeHerrera also currently holds the single-season record with 164.
"Must be something in Springer water because everyone from Springer can shoot the ball," said Estevan. "We would always go to the park and shoot together even when I was in high school and he was young... If anyone was to break it, it's cool when its your younger brother for sure."
"It means a lot, beating my brother," Pablo said. "So, it's pretty cool. I mean, crazy. I can't believe it."
With Pablo's efforts, Springer also tied the single-game record for three-pointers made by a team with 23. Texico also reached that mark earlier this month.
