Carrie Underwood’s decision to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration next week has found an unlikely supporter in Whoopi Goldberg. The outspoken EGOT winner — who has been vocal on her disdain for Trump — said that while she “won’t be watching” the presidential ceremony, she has no problem with the country music star’s right to perform where she chooses. “People do what they do for whatever reason,” Goldberg, 69, said on Tuesday’s episode of “The View,” noting how even MSNBC hosts and Trump critics Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski met with the president-elect at Mar-a-Lago after he won his bid for the White House in November. Underwood faced swift social media backlash after reps for Trump confirmed on Monday that she’d perform “America the Beautiful” during his swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 20. The 41-year-old “American Idol” winner, who has long been mum on her political stance, quickly defended her decision to perform at Trump’s second inauguration, saying she loves the United States and was “honored to have been asked.” “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future,” she said in a statement. A proponent of free speech, Goldberg said she stands behind Underwood’s decision, even if she wouldn’t make the same choice herself. “If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform some place, I believe [she has] the same right. I have to support,” Goldberg said. “It doesn’t mean I’m particularly interested. I won’t be watching, but that’s just me.”
