New Mexico business owner reaches settlement over use of COVID19 relief funds

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A restaurant owner has agreed to pay more than $3 million for misusing COVID-19 relief funds. The U.S. Attorney for New Mexico said Leonard Vandenberg, who operates several restaurants in New Mexico and Texas, received $2.8 million dollars through the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program. However, prosecutors say most of that money went into Vandenberg's personal investment accounts.
New Mexico suicide rate decreases among women and Indigenous Peoples
As part of a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, Vandenberg must pay that money back plus restitution.
