UK police chief offers back to school tips for winter weather
Jan 14, 2025
With college classes underway again at most Kentucky schools, University of Kentucky officials are offering advice on how to get there safely. Joe Monroe is the chief of police at UK, where school resumed Monday. He had these tips for students and staff who live off campus.
“One, that you’ve tested the battery ahead of time. You make sure that the battery is in good condition. You look at your tires. You make sure your tires are ready to go. You don’t have bald tires because you’re not going to get much traction in the winter on tires with no tread.”
Monroe said on and off-campus, drivers should slow down when roads are suspect and keep a shovel, blanket, flashlight and snacks in their vehicles. As for those walking to class, he suggested leaving early and dressing warmly.
“That hat, that warm jacket, those gloves, boots that have good traction, whether it’s snow boots or work boots, something that has. Good traction is important. You don’t be walking around in cowboy boots or sandals, of course.”
Monroe said in his three decades with the department, he’s seen students wearing non-winter garb on bitterly cold days many times, which puts them at risk of frostbite, injuries and illness. He said UK’s alert system lets folks know if classes are delayed or cancelled.
