PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence firefighter who is accused of assaulting two Johnston police officers is no longer a member of the Providence Fire Department, according to the City of Providence.
According to a statement from a Providence spokesperson:
While the City does not comment on personnel matters, Mayor Smiley expects Providence firefighters to uphold the highest standards of integrity. As of Friday, Patrick Brearley is no longer a Providence Firefighter.
Brearley, 42, was arrested on January 4 at The Ave Bar and Grille in Johnston after police responded to calls of a male customer who was “disruptive to other customers” at approximately 11:50 a.m.
Police said that Brearley was “extremely intoxicated and disoriented” and refused to leave the restaurant.
Police then attempted to escort Brearley out of the restaurant when he allegedly clenched his fist, causing officers to “take him to the ground.”
At this point, Brearley allegedly punched one officer in the face, and then struck the second officer in the face while the officers attempted to place him in hand restraints.
The officers were able to restrain Brearley and take him into custody.
