Jan 14, 2025
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — At exactly noon, lawmakers in both chambers started the first day of the legislative session.
It was a time for outlining some of the bills that will be taken up in the coming months.
Many items lawmakers addressed last session are expected to be taken up again, including energy supply, judicial reform and school choice.
Another long debated topic will be discussed now that Republicans enjoy a super majority, a more restrictive abortion ban.sc
Despite being only one of 12 Democratic senators at the statehouse, Tameika Isaac Devine hopes to address some legislation that gains bipartisan support. The senator says she also agrees with many of Governor McMaster’s budget proposals.
One thing Devine does not support is private school choice, a bill that was struck down last year by the state supreme court.
Republican lawmakers plan to reintroduce the private school scholarship fund using lottery revenue this time.
