Jan 14, 2025
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A local nonprofit organization dedicated to racial justice and empowering women will hold five days of events as a tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. beginning this week.
Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) organizers say the 2025 theme for the tribute is “Until Justice Just Is,” which reflects the shared commitment to justice.
The social events will offer community workshops and performances and encourage thoughtful discussions around the 2025 theme.
Keynote event speakers include Trevor Saunders and Adam Shoemaker.
Saunders is a Johns Island native who holds degrees from Tuskegee University and the University of North Alabama. He is currently the Vice President and General Manager of David J. Joseph, a Nucor Company, and serves on the board of Tuskegee University’s business school.
Shoemaker is currently the rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston and has served as co-president of the Charleston Area Justice Ministry, president of the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, and co-chair of the Diocese of South Carolina’s Racial Justice and Reconciliation Commission.
