BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Governor Kelly Armstrong said one of his campaign promises was to pass stronger property tax relief for neighbors. On Tuesday, he and state lawmakers presented one way they hope to get that done with House Bill 1176. The bill, sponsored by Bismarck representative Mike Nathe, would increase the property tax credit for people from $500 to $1,550. It would also expand the homestead credit program for seniors. North Dakota lawmaker wants 10 Commandments back in schools State leaders say around 165,000 homeowners may qualify, and the plan would spend almost half a billion dollars, including 310 million from the general fund. "So, as this piece of the funding grows, you'll take 50 cents of the growth, and pay off the general fund expense, and the other 50 cents of the growth will go to continued property tax relief. So both of those things will continue to grow. And I want to be clear, this is a primary residential credit. This is what we heard from our constituents all across the state as we were going," Governor Armstrong said. If passed, the bill would use another $173.4 million from North Dakota's legacy earnings fund. The bill would exclude any places where tax levies have already been passed by voters.
