BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Louisiana Supreme Court suspended a Baton Rouge lawyer who pleaded guilty to possessing child porn. On Jan. 8, the Supreme Court considered a petition filed by the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, that would suspend 69-year-old James Burland from practicing law in Louisiana indefinitely. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Burland pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and faced up to 20 years in prison and fined up to $250,000. Burland reportedly admitted to uploading a file with child porn to his internet-based cloud storage account in November 2022. Officials said more child porn files were found on Burland's storage account between the dates of Nov. 11, 2022, and April 9, 2024. Over 100 additional files were found on Burland's personal computer, the DOJ reports. According to the Louisiana State Bar Association, Burland has been a member of the Louisiana Bar since April 1981.
