CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A 34-year-old man was sentenced Monday for carjacking a woman at gunpoint and then robbing two convenience stores in 2017. Marquine Antonio Benbow was sentenced to 20 years in prison, followed by three years of court-ordered supervision by Judge David C. Norton for crimes he committed on Aug. 22, 2017. Judge Norton accepted a negotiated resolution for Benbow’s sentence, according to the US Department of Justice. Evidence presented at court showed Benbow carjacked a woman at gunpoint and later drove her vehicle to a Circle K in Summerville, where he pointed a weapon at the cashier and demanded money. He then robbed a Circle K in Charleston about an hour later, the justice department said. Benbow’s DNA was left in the carjacked vehicle, and surveillance video from both Circle K’s matched his description. “This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone,” officials said. The North Charleston Police Department and FBI Columbia Field Office investigated this case.
