ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)--- Leaders of the Senate Majority and Senate Minority held press conferences ahead of session. Both took questions from the media on a multitude of topics, including prison reform. The question comes after the beating of Robert Brooks by officers at Marcy Correctional Facility was caught on camera. Brooks’ death is currently under investigation by a special prosecutor after the Attorney General’s Office recused itself from the case.  https://www.news10.com/news/ny-news/more-suspensions-issued-in-robert-brooks-case/ "We are looking for a lot of things to happen, certainly as a result of the tragic death of Mr. Brooks, including charges being made. We’re still waiting for charges," Stewart-Cousins told reporters on Monday at a press conference. "I’m sure there will be hearings and this is how we do things. We generally try and look at the issues, study it, and then as is required make recommendations and make legislation." Republican Minority Leader Rob Ortt, was also asked questions about the issue at a press conference. He called the officers involved a disgrace to the uniform of their profession and that there should be accountability from the Department of Corrections. "Obviously the prison needs more stringent oversight of that specific individual location," said Ortt. "But I think to cast a dispersion that all prisons, that this is happening everywhere and that all corrections officers engage in this kind of behavior, I just don’t believe that is true." The minority leader went on to say that HALT, underfunding, and other previous prison reforms should be reviewed as well in light of what happened. As for the speed of the investigation, Ortt said, "Unlike some of my colleagues, I’m never going to say-- you move at the rate to get to the bottom of truth and Justice. That’s the thing. Sometimes it moves slower than people want, but I’d rather have it move slow and get to a just conclusion than to speed it up for political purposes or because people are feeling the heat in the media."
