STARKVILLE, Ms. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Kentucky men’s basketball is bringing SEC win number two and Mark Pope’s 200th win as a head coach back to the Bluegrass after a 95-90 victory over Mississippi State. This is also Kentucky’s fourth win over a Top 25 team this season. The game featured seven ties and 13 lead changes as both teams exchanged scoring runs in the first half, but Kentucky went into halftime up 49-44 thanks to Jaxson Robinson sinking back to back three pointers. Despite the efforts of State’s Claudell Harris Junior and Cameron Matthews, who combined for 32 points, the Wildcats trailed once after halftime even though its 14 point lead evaporated. A trio of three-pointers from Ansley Almonor, whose final triple bumped the Wildcat lead to seven with just over five minutes left, helped close out the win. It was Jaxson Robinson, the Cats’ leading scorer with 27 points, and Lamont Butler who drained the final shots to put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs. Six Kentucky players scored in double figures and Amari Williams led the Wildcats in rebounds with 12. Shooting-wise, UK shot 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. The issue was at the free throw line as Kentucky went 11/19 compared to MSU’s 14/18. UK returns to Lexington for a two game home stand against Texas A & M on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and versus Alabama on Sunday at Noon.
