Gritty defensive effort lifts UNM past SDSU

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Lobo men's basketball team has protected the Pit once again. In Saturday's "stripe out" game against San Diego State, the Lobos took down the Aztecs 62-48.
The Lobos set the tone early in the first half. UNM went on a 12-0 while the defense did not allow a field goal for 6:47.
The first-half defensive effort was on full display as SDSU was held to just 20 points. The strong defensive performance continued into the second half, as well as a dominating rebounding effort.
UNM was very active on the boards. UNM recorded 11 offensive rebounds in the first half alone and won the overall rebounding battle 51-35.
Coach Pitino described the overall effort as gritty, especially when it came to hustle stats. UNM had more points off turnovers (9-1), second chance (14-1) and fast breaks (13-2).
While New Mexico did not have a clean shooting performance all around, the Lobos were able to get the most out of their opportunities. For the game, New Mexico converted 24-67 (36%) SDSU struggled to find clean looks for much of the game and finished 17-48 (35%).
Donovan Dent led all scorers with 16 points. Mustapha Amzil recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Full stats.
With the win, New Mexico remains unbeaten this season against the Mountain West. At 6-0 inside of conference play, the Lobos remain at the top of the league.
