Three Ball State board members honored with Sagamore of the Wabash Awards

MUNCIE, Ind. (WANE) -- Three members of the Ball State Board of Trustees were honored with a Sagamore of the Wabash Award Friday.
Gov. Eric J. Holcomb honored Rick Hall, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Mike McDaniel, Board Secretary and President Geoffrey S. Mearns with a Sagamore of the Wabash Award.
The Governor of Indiana awards the Sagamore of the Wabash Award which is a given out to those who have offered a distinguished service to the state or governor.

Rick Hall, the Chair of the Board of Trustees has held several leadership positions, including vice chair, chair and secretary. He currently not only serves on the Board of Trustees but he is also the chair of the Finance, Facilities, and Planning Committee.
Hall serves as a partner and chair of the Governmental Services and Finance Department at Barnes & Thornburg LLP, which has allowed him to build a career in advising municipalities, businesses, and nonprofits on economic development, infrastructure financing, and public policy initiatives. He served as counsel for one of Indiana's largest economic development deals securing more than $100 million in incentives for Infosys.
His efforts have also supported the development of renewable energy projects, including numerous wind farms across the state.

Mike McDaniel, was appointed to the Ball State Board of Trustees in 2016 by then-Gov. Mike Pence and serves as the board’s secretary. Trustee McDaniel has served as the director of governmental affairs for the University and director of what is now the Bowen Center for Public Affairs. During his time at Ball State, he worked to expand the University’s impact on public service and civic engagement.
This is Trustee McDaniel’s fifth Sagamore of the Wabash honor. He previously received the award from Governors Otis R. Bowen (1978), Robert D. Orr (1981), Evan Bayh (1997), and Mike Pence (2016).

In 2017, Geoffrey Mearns became the 17 president of Ball State. Since becoming President the University launched its strategic plan, Destination 2040: Our Flight Path, with a focus on undergraduate excellence, community engagement, and institutional inclusiveness.
In addition to his role at Ball State, President Mearns serves on the Board of Directors for the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership and the IU Health East Central Region board. He also co-chairs the Central City Leadership Team for Next Muncie.
The Sagamore of the Wabash was created during the term of Gov. Ralph Gates.
