FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - After several raids from Border Patrol were reported in Kern County, agents announced they would be heading to Fresno in the coming days, and the Fresno County Sheriff's Office announced their position in the situation. On Tuesday, Yourcentravalley.com's sister station, KGET reported several residents in Kern County saw several federal immigration agents in the area, including reports of agents going door-to-door and pulling vehicles over on highways. Raids in the Central Valley: What can undocumented immigrants do to protect themselves? Federal officials responded to the reports, stating Border Patrol agents "focused on interdicting those who have broken U.S. federal law, trafficking of dangerous substances, non-citizen criminals and disrupting the transportation routes used by Transnational Criminal Organizations." On Thursday morning, the Border Patrol announced more operations are being planned, but this time, the efforts will focus on places like Fresno and Sacramento. They add the Border Patrol is no stranger to operations in Bakersfield, Stockton, Modesto, Fresno and Sacramento. To this, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office released a statement, saying they are not involved in any of these operations. "We would like to reiterate a message we have consistently issued to the public. Our deputies do NOT conduct enforcement actions related to immigration matters; it is not part of our job description. There are designated federal agencies (e.g. U.S. Customs and Border Protection) who specialize in such investigations, and as law enforcement, have the complete right to do so." Additionally, councilmember Luis Chavez says the Fresno Police Department is also not involved in any operations related to Border Patrol. "The public can rest assisted local law enforcement agencies are focused on criminal activities, not immigration status enforcement," Chavez said. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office reminds anyone who is a victim of a crime to always rely on the sheriff's office to respond to their needs regardless of their immigration status.
