WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) -- David Chandler has been bringing the violin to life since he was a boy by creating notes.
Now in his 70s, he’s spent the past 20 years building instruments himself entirely by hand.
“Made my first violin without any help from anybody, and it ended up in the fireplace,” Chandler said.
He now has perfected the craft and is currently working on his 40th instrument.
“I like to call it birthing an instrument," he said.
It takes him about three months. He crafts the wood to create a unique sound.
“I use a lot of hand tools,” he said. “It’s all made from scratch.”
The woodworking shop at Salemtowne is what lured him to retire in Winston-Salem.
“What I really enjoy is the process, and it’s taught me patience if nothing else," he said.
He finds joy here in the shop building violins. In the end, he gives away to groups that help children find passion in music.
“I've been donating a lot to groups like the Winston-Salem Symphony,” he said. “These are mostly for those youngsters that are ready to progress beyond the student instrument.”
