SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco's new mayor has been busy. On Thursday, one day after being inaugurated, Mayor Daniel Lurie announced the city would implement an immediate hiring freeze to try and bring the city's record budget deficit under control.
On Friday, the new mayor announced that he had promoted San Francisco Fire Department Battalion Chief Dean Crispen to fire chief. Crispen, a 34-year department veteran, will be SFFD's 27th fire chief.
"Battalion Chief Crispen takes on this role having displayed exemplary leadership throughout his career and put his life on the line for San Francisco residents and Americans across the country," Mayor Lurie's office said in a statement.

During his more than three decades with SFFD, Crispen has captained stations in North Beach, Chinatown, and SOMA. He has also served as battalion chief for stations that are among the biggest in the city and country.
He has been recognized three times for bravery in service of SF residents following the rescue of elderly victims from a fire in the Tenderloin. He has also served as incident commander at 50 major SF incidents.
Notably, Crispen was part of SFFD's response to New York City in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
“With over 34 years of distinguished experience serving our city, Chief Crispen will lead the San Francisco Fire Department with the same compassion, integrity, and unwavering dedication that have defined his entire career,” said Mayor Lurie. “Whether as a first responder, an advocate for underserved populations, or a leader fostering collaboration, he has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to meet challenges with both strength and empathy.”
“My number one goal as Chief of the Department is to safeguard the health and safety of all members of the San Francisco Fire Department and all San Franciscans,” said Chief Crispen. “We are implementing Mayor Lurie’s vision for a safer, cleaner San Francisco and will continue to collaborate with other departments to ensure citizens are receiving the best public safety services.”
Crispen is a native San Franciscan and father to two boys raised in the city, the mayor's office added.
