It might be cold outside but Baltimore’s restaurant community is bringing the heat this week, with events, specials, and a lot of juicy news.Here’s a look at what’s happening:Openings & announcementsKneads Bakeshop & Café’s new Cross Keys location opens on Friday, Jan. 10. Tavern at the Admiral, the bar in the Admiral Fell Inn, has reopened – and has a solid lineup of warm drinks designed for cold weather. Atlas Restaurant Group has shared some new information about one of its upcoming concepts, the izakaya that will open in Harbor East in the spring. The restaurant will be called Kannon and takes its inspiration from similar spots in Tokyo. The Baltimore Banner reported this week that White Oak Hospitality, the company that owns Bandito’s and Wayward Bar & Kitchen, is hoping to take over the Mother’s space in Federal Hill and potentially expand the Purple Patio space. The Papi’s Tacos location on Harford Road, which opened last year, will close and rebrand as Alexander’s Tavern. Both Papi’s and Alexander’s are part of the restaurant group run by Charlie Gjerde.The Point in Towson, which was originally set to close after business this weekend, appears to be extending its operation, at least for now. The restaurant and bar had plans in place to remain open for pop-ups and as an event space and for now, it looks like that will translate into at least semi-regular business. This weekend, Chef Johnny Lease will pop up in the kitchen on Saturday night. The Winter Village at the Four Seasons Hotel is currently open and has a cool dining addition: the ability to reserve a private cottage on the fourth-floor rooftop of the hotel for a meal. Inside the cottage, which has a view of the harbor.Sadly, Cocina Luchadoras has closed the doors of its Upper Fells Point location. However, there is some good news for fans of the restaurant: as of this week, the team behind Cocina Luchadoras will be at Saunter Corner Bar every Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving favorite foods and drinks from the old menu.Foreman & WolfBaltimore’s most well-known restaurant duo – Tony Foreman and Cindy Wolf – have announced that they are parting ways. The powerhouse team has been a major player in the Baltimore restaurant world for decades.Fortunately, while they won’t be working directly together anymore, they’ll both continue to have an impact on the Baltimore restaurant community and their restaurants, which are key to the fabric of the city and surrounding area, will remain open. Wolf, who is the chef at Charleston, will retain control over that business and will remain in the kitchen there.Foreman, who is a front of house presence, will continue to operate the rest of the restaurant portfolio, which includes stalwarts like Petit Louis and Johnny’s along with relative newcomers, like The Milton Inn and The Duchess. Big news for Baltimore whiskeyBaltimore Spirits Co.’s Epoch Reserve has gotten some great news recently: it’s been named to Fred Minnick’s Top 100 Whiskeys of 2024 list – which is a big deal in the whiskey world.  Weekend of goodbyesThis is the final weekend to say goodbye to Nacho Mama’s in Canton and Towson. The iconic restaurants will be open through the weekend for last visits and the opportunity to take home a memento, like a farewell t-shirt or one of their famous hubcaps, so you can try to recreate the Nacho’s margarita at home. Chesapeake Bay Boat ShowThe 4th annual Chesapeake Bay Boat Show comes to the State Fairgrounds this weekend – and its bringing some food with it. In addition to tons of boat-related vendors and other fun activities, the show will include, among other things, demonstrations from Jimmy’s Famous Seafood’s Chef Charlie, who will provide instruction on catfish cleaning and cooking and oyster shucking. A new kind of Restaurant WeekWhile Baltimore City’s traditional Restaurant Week is scheduled to start later this month, a few organizations are starting restaurant week-style events of their own.From Jan. 17 to Jan. 26, Atlas Restaurant Group will host a restaurant week-style event with a charitable twist. During that time period, guests can enjoy $25 prix-fixe lunches and $45 or $60 prix-fixe dinners at participating Atlas locations and the organization will donate $3 from every lunch and $5 from every dinner to the non-profit TasteWise Kids.Participating restaurants include Azumi, Loch Bar, Monarque, Tagliata, The Ruxton, James Joyce, The Choptank (Baltimore and Annapolis), The Oregon Grille, Ouzo Bay, The Valley Inn and Watershed. Live! Casino is also hosting a restaurant week of its own, starting on Jan. 19. Five of the casino’s restaurants will participate in the event: David’s, KOHO, Luk Fu, Sports & Social Maryland, and The Prime Rib.Barstool in BaltimoreA couple weeks ago, news flew around social media that Dave Portnoy, President of Barstool Sports and pizza fanatic, was checking out pizza spots in Baltimore while he was in the area for the Army-Navy football game.Portnoy, who posts “One Bite” reviews of pizza joints across the country on his social media, shared a video from one of his stops, TinyBrickOven, before Christmas. This week, several additional videos dropped, including Pizza John’s, Matthews, Angelini’s, and Frank’s Pizza and Pasta, which earned especially high praise from Portnoy.The videos are all terrific – full of personality and stories. Don’t miss the end of the Matthews Pizza video, when a surprise guest joins in the conversation.Mocktail mixology at Hotel RevivalHotel Revival’s B-Side had a fun mocktail-making class scheduled for last week – but the snowstorm got in the way. Fortunately, the crew has rescheduled the class for Tuesday evening. Orin Swift wine dinner at MagdalenaOn Thursday, Magdalena welcomes Kori Butler, the winemaker from Orin Swift, for a special dinner showcasing the company’s wines. The evening includes a five course meal plus conversation with the winemaker.Origins series returnsOrigins, the food-oriented speaker series hosted by Spike Gjerde, is back. On Thursday, Gjerde will host Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks for a dinner and discussion at Woodberry Kitchen. The topic of conversation will be the state of farming in Maryland. Winter Wine Wednesdays at Love, PomeloAll month long, Love, Pomelo is celebrating the wines of Italy. Each Wednesday, the restaurant will feature wines from a different region of the country, offering $10 glasses and half off featured bottles.From Jan. 14-18, the spotlight will be on the wines of Veneto, including Prosecco and Valpolicella reds.
