RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A driver is in custody accused of leading Wake County Sheriff's deputies on a pursuit and claiming to not have working brakes. The Sheriff's Office says deputies initially attempted to pull the driver over on New Bern Avenue near Old Millburnie Road for speeding, but that the driver didn't stop. Dispatch calls indicate the driver travelling in excess of 100 miles per hour at one point. "We’re heading towards New Bern Avenue, it’s going to be a silver-colored Mazda 3," one call relayed. "Speeds currently 129." Investigators say deputies pursued the driver onto Interstate 40 eastbound. In dispatch calls, the driver tells responding officers he doesn't have brakes. "He's telling me he's got no brakes. I pulled up beside him. 41 miles per hour, no brake lights coming on, he's got his hazards on at this point in time." The Sheriff's Office says he also called 911 operators and was told to stop accelerating. The driver was eventually stopped and taken into custody near the NC 540 exit in Garner.
