SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Grocery shoppers are facing a little sticker shock every time they go to the store.Inflation has driven up the price on a lot of our daily food items, and eggs have skyrocketed in the last few weeks. It's leaving a lot of shoppers scrambling to find lower prices. Black-owned business targeted with racist graffiti Ty and Emily Stavnes can't believe the price of eggs. "I think they are a reflection with what's happening with the economy and everything else," Ty said. "When you go to a grocery store you don't expect to be spending that much on something you use every day," Emily said. Don: Do you guys eat a lot of eggs? Emily: Not anymore. Ty: Because of the price, no. At Franklin Foods, a dozen of eggs range in price from $4.99 to $6.99 a dozen. "My family used to eat a lot of eggs and they just keep going up,"Tammy Gibbs said. To give you an idea of how fast the prices is climbing they went up 50 cents a dozen just today and when I asked the owner if we are done with that he said time will tell, because it's all about supply and demand. The reason eggs are so pricey right now: farmers have fought a battle with a fatal strain of bird flu that continues to disrupt the U.S. egg supply. So as supplies tighten, egg prices rise. Angela Lyon is the checkout clerk at Franklin. She says she's only sold a few dozen eggs today. "And everybody is just saying wow and they shake their head about the price of the eggs, so I make sure all the eggs are good in the pack before they leave, I don't want them to take cracked eggs," Lyon said. For some, the price is forcing them to change their habits. "A lot of people are starting to raise their own chickens and I said that's what we'll have to do," Gibbs said. The bird flu virus has affected more than 130 million birds in the U.S. since January 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
