DENVER (KDVR) — The NFL playoffs are set to begin this weekend and after the postseason, only one team will be left standing, holding the honor of being Super Bowl champions. It is a celebration that has only occurred 58 times and of those 58 times, not one has ever been celebrated by a starting rookie quarterback. After a nine-year hiatus from the postseason, the Denver Broncos have the chance to change that in Super Bowl 59 if the Bo Nix-led team can make it all the way. Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills: TV channel, time, what to know In order to do so, Nix must play like he has 10 years of experience in his "entry-level job." Entering the playoffs as a wild card, the Broncos would need to win four games to take home the big prize and showcase the greatest rookie quarterback playoff run in NFL history. While a championship is the ultimate goal, for Nix the magic number to prove he is the best rookie quarterback to ever play in the postseason is three, the number of wins no rookie quarterback has ever accumulated. Rookie quarterbacks have posted some phenomenal regular seasons but have yet to see that really translate to the playoffs. When games are on the line it would appear that an experienced mind may be the X-factor. The highest amount of games won in the playoffs by a rookie quarterback is two. The mark has been met by eight different quarterbacks. Those eight quarterbacks include: 1952: Tom Dublinksi (Detroit Lions) 1969: Bob Lee (Minnesota Vikings) 1976: Mike Rae (Oakland Raiders) 1978: Gifford Nielsen (Houston Oilers) 1994: Elvis Grbac (San Francisco 49ers) 2008: Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens) 2009: Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) 2022: Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers) Out of these eight quarterbacks, some faced a loss in their third start. Whereas others were hooked off-stage entirely and had their starts given to a more experienced quarterback in the team's third game. A third win for any of these young quarterbacks would have seen them make history as no rookie quarterback has even been given the opportunity to start a Super Bowl game. The latest a rookie quarterback has started was the conference final game. Rookies who started in those games include: 1999: Shawn King (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) 2004: Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers) 2008: Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens) 2009: Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) 2022: Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers) Roethlisberger and King did not appear on the previous list because they did not play in one of the games of the earlier rounds of the playoffs but both can claim one rookie playoff win. While Broncos fans will ultimately be pulling for Nix's success, he may be involved in another piece of history alongside a quarterback from another team. Google Trends: Nearly every US state is searching the Broncos over the Bills The Washington Commanders have also been led by a rookie quarterback this year, Jayden Daniels. Daniels and Nix are both expected to get the start on Sunday which would be only the fourth time that rookie quarterbacks start on at least two playoff teams in the same season, after being the majority starter during the regular season. The three other times feature the duos and one trio of: 1983: Hall of famers John Elway (Denver Broncos) and Dan Marino (Miami Dolphins) 2008: Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) and Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens) 2014: Andrew Luck (Indianapolis Colts), Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks) and Robert Griffin III (now known as the Washington Commanders) No rookie quarterbacks have ever won their starts in the playoffs in the same year. The Broncos start their playoff run on Sunday in New York against the Buffalo Bills at 11 a.m.
