(KRON) -- A person who allegedly stole 30 cans of Red Bull from a Dollar Tree in Union City on Tuesday was arrested rather than being cited and released. Union City police touted that it is the department’s first Proposition 36 arrest since its passage. The Red Bull theft suspect had previously been arrested and convicted of theft 19 times, according to the Union City Police Department, and has seven other pending theft charges. These previous cases are “not including many other arrests where charges were not filed,” authorities said. Instead of issuing a citation and releasing the suspect, the responding officer placed him under arrest. “Under Prop 36, people convicted of certain theft crimes can face increased punishments, including longer sentences and possible treatment programs,” Union City PD explained. “This law strengthens penalties for serial thieves, drug traffickers, and smash-and-grab crimes.”
