SCOUTING RIDER: The Broncs’ three MAAC losses are by a combined nine points and all have been a one-possession game in the final minute. That tells you they are not overmatched or getting blown out, but rather unable to make the winning plays that matter. Case in point: Sunday’s loss to Manhattan when they committed a pair of costly turnovers that allowed the Jaspers to tie the game with four points in transition. Then they gave up the winning 3 with 6.8 seconds left after taking the lead on a Jay Alvarez layup. They aren’t good enough to get away those kinds of mistakes. The result is an eight-game losing streak and 0-3 start in league play. With only 10 teams making it to Atlantic City, Rider needs wins and needs them fast. If there is something to harp back on it’s the team started 0-3 in the league last season and finished 12-8 and in fourth place. But it has to start with breaking this losing streak against an opponent that is yet to win this season.
SCOUTING CANISIUS: It’s been a dreadful first season for Jim Christian in Buffalo, but you feel like the Griffs are going to win a game at some point. This is certainly one they would have circled against a struggling Rider. Canisius gave up 99 last time out against Sacred Heart and is allowing 81.9 points per game, while only scoring 63.1. The Griffs, however, did score a season high 82 in that loss to Sacred Heart and guard Paul McMillan IV is second in the MAAC at 19.7 points per game.
