WEBSTER, N.Y. (WROC) - The West Webster Fire Department said they successfully extinguished a fire at Bowlero on Empire Blvd. in Webster before it spread to other parts of the building. Fire crews were first called to the bowling alley at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday for reports of smoke in the rear kitchen. This caused the nearly 200 patrons inside Bowlero at the time to evacuate. When West Webster Firefighters went inside, they found flames coming from the ceiling near the back of the building. According to West Webster Fire's Public Information Officer Al Sienkiewicz, the crew controlled the fire before it spread to other parts of the building. "In a lot of situations similar to this, our crews arrive and things are heavily involved in fire by the time it's noticed or detectors and sprinkler systems go off," Sienkiewicz said. Sienkiewicz went on to say this wasn't the case for Wednesday's fire and that crews managed the flames within an hour of arriving on scene. He added that the attic space above where the fire was is completely empty, and that had the fire not been extinguished as quickly, it could've spread rapidly. "We could've arrived there with flames shooting out of the roof of the building fairly easily," Sienkiewicz said. "It was advantageous that it happened the way it did." Although this situation could've ended a lot worse, Sienkiewicz said it was still a scary sight for everyone involved, especially patrons. "You're halfway through your frame bowling and all of a sudden someone comes up to you and tells you to leave," Sienkiewicz said. "It doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out how this could've gotten a lot more serious a lot quicker." On Thursday, disaster response crews were at Bowlero repairing the building. A cause for Wednesday's fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
