WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) said officers arrested a man for trying to light his car on fire near Capitol grounds Wednesday evening. At around 5:30 p.m., USCP said officers responded to First Street in Northwest D.C. for a suspicious vehicle near the Grant Memorial. A man had lit a bag on fire and it was placed on top of his car. Jimmy Carter lies in state at Capitol Rotunda, Trump among those paying respect Officers ran over to the man and the bag extinguished on its own. They arrested the driver, a 35-year-old man from Virginia, and charged him with Unlawful Activities. USCP's bomb squad investigated the car and determined that it was not dangerous as of 7 p.m. Officials said the car had been spray painted and accelerants were in the bag. First Street between Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, and Maryland Avenue, SW and Third Street between Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, and Maryland Avenue, SW were shut down as a result of the investigation. A few hours earlier, USCP officers stopped and arrested a man who tried to bring various knives including a machete into the Capitol Visitor Center. “Twice today our officers stopped a man who could have been a danger to the Capitol Hill community,” U.S. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger, said. “This vigilance is critical during this time of heightened security.” These two arrests come after security has been heightened around D.C. in preparation for former President Jimmy Carter's funeral, the certification of the 2024 presidential results and President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration and his victory rally at the Capital One Arena. Rockville student convicted after threatening to ‘shoot up’ school USCP said it does not believe that there is an ongoing threat to the community and that the two arrests are not connected. The driver's identity will be released when USCP finishes more of its investigative work into the incident.
