SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - In this cold snap, the wind chill can make the already frigid temperatures feel even more unbearable and extremely dangerous. With the wind chill we've been experiencing, cold-related illnesses like Frostbite could set in. Prolonged exposure to the cold could also put you at risk for Hypothermia. "It does come on really quickly and especially people that take medications are the elderly maybe that don't notice the temperature, the extreme temperature change as quickly," Western MA Operations Manager from American Medical Response, Kim D'Angelo. Representatives with American Medical Response warning people to limit their time outdoors to avoid any potential serious medical emergencies like hypothermia or frostbite from occurring. Hypothermia can lead the body's core temperature to drop to below 95 degrees. It can lead to confusion, drowsiness, and even death if left untreated. Frostbite, on the other hand, is the actual freezing of a body part, most often the fingers, toes, ears, or nose, making it feel hard, waxy, or discolored. To protect yourself when braving the cold AMR suggests: Wearing a hat as 40 percent of body heat escapes through the scalp Wear mittens Remove any clothing that gets wet as soon as possible "I would definitely tell people to bundle up. As you can see, I multiple layers on I think is the best way way to stay warm out here," said Harold Rivera of Springfield. "Layering is the best way. That way, if they do get overheated, they can start to remove layers. But the more that they put on, the better off they are," added D'Angelo. While keeping warm is crucial during cold weather, it is equally important to stay safe when heating your home. "You want to make sure that anything that produces carbon monoxide, any gas-powered equipment remains outside of your house like generators and things like that should never be run indoors," said D'Angelo. She says to also make sure to check on them regularly and to operate them only as intended. If you do suspect you or someone else is experiencing hypothermia or frostbite it is advised to call 911 for help immediately.
