(MONTEZUMA COUNTY, Colo.) — A 23-year-old Ute man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on a charge of Second-Degree Murder of a Child in December 2024 on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation in southwest Colorado. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado, 23-year-old Jeremiah Hight is facing one count of Second-Degree murder of a Child and one count of Discharging a Firearm During a Crime of Violence. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Boy killed in Colorado reservation shooting was in bed when he was hit Just after midnight on Dec. 11, a 7-year-old boy was killed when the home he was sleeping in was hit by gunfire. The shooting reportedly left 24 bullet holes in the home, and investigators found 24 bullet casings from an “assault-style rifle” at the shooting site. They were recovered near where a person was seen shooting on a surveillance video, according to an arrest affidavit. On Dec. 19, Hight was charged in a criminal complaint and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to Hight's arrest. He was taken into custody on Christmas Eve on a mesa in a remote area west of Oljato, Utah, on the Navajo Nation reservation.
