ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - Major expansions are proposed for childcare access in New York State. Gov. Kathy Hochul made the announcement Tuesday, which will be part of her upcoming State of the State Address. Hochul proposing $110 million to build more childcare centers The governor is pitching $110 million to build new childcare facilities and renovate existing ones across New York. It's paired with other initiatives to help address what have been described as childcare deserts statewide. "It's a significant piece of the puzzle that we need to put together to solve the childcare issues that people in Rochester and people all over the state are facing," said Pete Nabozny, director of policy for The Children's Agenda in Rochester. Gov. Hochul is also proposing to create a substitute teacher pool to help alleviate staffing issues in childcare across the state. She also intends to establish a coalition to develop a plan for universal childcare. "You have waiting lists to get into programs, particularly programs for very young children, infants, and toddlers especially. There are programs struggling to find staff who can work the hours they need. I think we're in a better place than we were several years ago. We've seen some notable investments in childcare in the past couple years from New York State. There's more money flowing into the child assistance program here in Monroe County than ever before. More families are getting care covered through the assistance program in more than a decade," said Nabozny. The proposals follow the governor's announcement earlier this week to expand the Child Care Tax Credit. Eligible families would receive more funds annually for every child enrolled in the state's assistance program. The State of the State Address will be delivered in Albany next Tuesday.
