Need for mentors in Rochester grows, waitlists expand

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Amid National Mentoring Month, folks of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester on Wednesday emphasized a need for mentorship within the community. Officials said the organization is one of many in the area helping youth reach their full potential.

Local leaders highlight National Mentoring Month
"What's growing right now, is our waitlist. We actually have a lot of littles on our waitlist now, we're a little over 130," said Tyler Landries, the marketing and events manager for BBBS. "We are in big need of volunteers. So, that's the big thing. It's easy to volunteer, we have a great process, a great team and match support specialists who will help you through the process."
A big misconception about mentoring, according to officials, is that it eats up a lot of time, steering people away from becoming a good mentor. However, BBBS told News 8 that it can be as simple as grabbing lunch together and acting as a safe space for children to turn to.
