Teen snowmobilers' lifesaving detour earns heroic recognition after rescuing elderly woman

BERTHOLD, ND (KXNET) — Owen Inman and Brennan Asmundson were enjoying their Christmas break snowmobiling north of Berthold the morning of January 1st. They were just about to cross the street to head on their normal route when they saw a truck coming down the road. They impulsively decided to take a different route two miles down the road.
And that sharp turn saved the life of Faye Schaefer when they stumbled upon her car in a ditch. Inman says by the grace of God, the car door was open, causing the boys to stop and check inside.
"We saw this car in the distance and I was like, oh, someone just abandoned it there, and we got a little closer, and the door was open, and I'm like, well, no one would abandon a car with their door open," Inman said. "So we got there and I rode up beside it and saw that there was someone inside."
The boys acted quickly, calling their parents and the police to help get the 84-year-old to safety.
"And then she opened her eyes and we both took our coats off and gave them to her and I thought to myself, with the coat off, it was cold out, and I don't know how long she's been there, but it's cold," Inman said.
But before these boys found Schaefer, all local law enforcement agencies and local government entities were making an effort to look for her.

"So I was coordinating with McHenry County Sheriff's Department, the state of North Dakota, Ward County Sheriff's Department, and other agencies to go out and check out some of these things that I was gathering," said Officer Wilkes with Minot PD.
Officer Wilkes says that finding Schaefer in her car was nothing short of a miracle. Her family, along with the whole community, was relieved to know that she was alive.
"It was a miracle," Officer Wilkes said. "I remember I left the station that night at about 7 p.m., I came to work the next morning and had a briefing at 7:30 in the morning and saw that there were few tips, a few people that had called in saying she wasn't found yet. With how cold it was that night and how long it had been, I was very skeptical and just grateful that those boys found her."
And now the boys are being recognized for the heroism. But they say all that matters is that she's safe and sound.
"Once we found out that she was all good and okay, I was real happy that we found her," Asmundson said.
These boys were honored on Wednesday, January 8, at the Ward County Administrative Building for their life-saving actions and bravery. Faye was at the award ceremony and is doing better.
