WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- The Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners spent some time during Wednesday's meeting to say goodbye to two commissioners. This was the last meeting for David Dennis and Sarah Lopez.
The commissioners watched videos about them and then praised all the work the two have accomplished over the years.
Dennis has represented District 3 for eight years, but his service to the community goes back five decades. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 29 years, taught at North High for 11 years, served on the State Board of Education and many other boards and committees, was a Boy Scout leader for 30 years, and serves at his church.
He is pleased with what the commission has accomplished during his eight years, including:
A new biomed facility that will be co-located with Comcare Crisis Center in downtown Wichita,
A new regional mental health hospital,
Fixing the county's staffing problems so people don't have to work as much overtime,
Funding for the Sedgwick County Zoo, which is preparing for five baby elephants this year, and
Funding for Exploration Place, which is building "epic" playscapes.

Dennis expressed his appreciation for all the people who have helped him and the community over the years.
"I also thank God for giving me the health and leadership ability to serve our nation, our state, our county, schools and city for over five decades," he said. "It's been an honor to serve the citizens of Sedgwick County, especially those in District 3."
Dennis plans to restore old cars. He'll also ride his new Harley-Davidson motorcycle in support of veterans.
Lopez served as the District 2 commissioner for four years. She thanked fellow commissioners for their collaboration and their work for the community.
"While we might not always agree on everything, as a couple of people have mentioned, I have the deepest amount of respect for each of you and the dedication and the unwavering belief that you hold for public service," she said. "Together, we've worked to address challenges, seize opportunities and created a stronger future for Sedgwick County together."
She said she is thankful for her time on the commission and hopes to find other ways to contribute to Sedgwick County.
Two new commissioners will take their oath of office this Sunday. Former Wichita City Council member Jeff Blubaugh will represent District 2. Stephanie Wise will represent District 3.
