NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — You have probably seen GoFundMe accounts to help victims of the Jan. 1 attack and their families. That's one way for people to donate but the non-profit, Greater New Orleans Foundation, is making sure donations get to the right people. "Just like everybody else we woke up on New Year's Day to learn the devastating news of an attack on America but an attack that took place in our great city. We raise funding and we spoke early that morning with Mayor Cantrell- she asked us to open up a fund for victims and those who were injured," said Greater New Orleans Foundation President and CEO Andy Kopplin. Louisiana remembers Drew Dauphin Kopplin says the foundation quickly sprung into action to be helpers and support people impacted by the New Year's attack in New Orleans. The goal is to help victims but also ensure that donors know that the money is going where it's supposed to. "The real important thing is we want to make sure that the process is fair, transparent, accountable, that donors know that the money will get to the actual victims," said Kopplin. To that end, the FBI is the first line of defense in screening victims, both the lists of families of the deceased and the list of those injured are in the dozens. "The information that the FBI has asked us to convey is that everybody who was a victim of this attack needs to go the family assistance center and identify themselves, and the FBI will help us identify the list," said Kopplin. From individuals to some of our most prominent citizens like Gayle Benson, Cam Jordan, and Zion Williamson have donated and so has our business community. Louisiana remembers Tiger Bech "Just wonderful support from folks like Baptist Community Ministries, Entergy Corporation, from the Helis Foundation locally and some nationally," said Kopplin. Finally, Kopplin says unlike aid coming from other sources, funding from GNOF is tax-free. "When we're making grants to the families of those who've lost somebody, or to the victims who were injured, they will not have to pay taxes on the funds if they come from us. If they come from a GoFundMe account that's not the same," said Kopplin. Contribute to the New Orleans New Year's Day Tragedy Fund by visiting the GNOF website.
