MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) - A Wisconsin State Senator announced that $1.2 million in state funding will officially be used to fix the Nitschke Bridge starting at the end of January.
According to a release from the office of Senator Eric Wimberger (R-Green Bay), the money was secured during the 2023-24 State Budget to end the bridge's frequent closures.

"It was alarming to see a Green Bay traffic artery as critical as the Ray Nitschke Bridge fall victim to yet another closure due to faulty electrical and technical hardware," Sen. Wimberger said via the release. "Commuters shouldn't have to worry about malfunctions interfering with their drive to work, appointments or wherever they may need to go during the day."
The Bridge was opened in 1998 and has since been hit with numerous malfunctions in recent years, with the most recent on Friday, January 3.
Officials said there was an electrical short in one equipment piece, and that it wasn't indicative of an issue with the structure itself.
