Jan 08, 2025
WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Cannabis Control Commission has approved the first draft of the state's rules and regulations for recreational cannabis use.
The commission, which was first appointed in 2023, says the proposed regulations "cover both adult use and medical cannabis" in the following areas:
Administration, procedures and enforcement
Applications, licensing and renewals
Operational requirements for cannabis establishments
Caregivers, medical home grows and personal cultivation
"Finalizing these regulations reflects the Commission's commitment to thoughtful, informed policymaking," Kim Ahern, who chairs the commission, said. "We've prioritized stakeholder input and best practices to establish a regulatory structure that promotes safety, equity, and transparency."

All of the regulations were crafted throughout the past year with consultation from multiple state agencies including the R.I. Department of Health and R.I. Department of Business Regulation.
There were also public hearings to gather input, the commission noted.
The full text of each regulation can be found on the R.I. Secretary of State's website and on the commission's website.
Another public comment hearing is scheduled for Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.
