Business fire shuts down east Douglas

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- The age of a Wichita building caused some problems for the Wichita Fire Department as it responded to a fire at Razook's Furniture Tuesday afternoon.
Around 1 p.m., firefighters were sent to the 1100 block of East Douglas, near Ohio Street, to check the report of smoke in the building.
The first firefighters to arrive saw smoke coming from the building. They upgraded the call to a building fire to get more help on the way. Traffic was detoured off Douglas while the firefighters worked.

"Crews immediately stretched an attack line, and they found the fire midway in the store in a utility area, started addressing it and started opening walls and ensuring there wasn't any other extension," Battalion Chief Matt Bowen, WFD, said.
As that was being done, other firefighters confirmed that people were out of the building.
Wichita requires cleared sidewalks, but no deadline except for downtown
Bowen said older buildings, like Razook's, present challenges because they have been remodeled many times and can have void spaces.
"Crews investigate all those void spaces to ensure we don't have any active fire," he said. "Took about 30 minutes to eliminate all possible areas where the fire could be."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Razook's has been in business for over 70 years. Earlier on Tuesday, the store posted a message on Facebook expressing its appreciation for its customers.
"Thank you for choosing local and for helping small businesses like ours continue to thrive," it said.
