MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- This morning there were flames and heavy smoke pouring out of two Memphis homes. Officials determined one of the fires was the result of arson. Along Walden Glen Street, just off Egypt Central Road in Raleigh, a home caught fire early Tuesday morning. Crews not only had to battle the fire at the home, but the cold weather as well. It's unclear if the house was occupied. House catches fire in Raleigh Not long after this call for help, more emergency responders were called to a home in Nutbush for a house that was supposed to be vacant. The fire was later determined to be arson, according to the Memphis Fire Department. Despite the home being boarded up, neighbors said squatters moved in a while back and may have set the fire while trying to stay warm. Firefighters found the home engulfed in flames and once again vacant. Neighbors told us that several people, several weeks back took it upon themselves to move into the boarded-up home. They say it's a home that's been boarded up for quite some time, but it's also been taken over multiple times by those looking to get out of the elements. The neighbors went on to say they're hoping the now badly burned home will no longer attract squatters - an issue they have had to live next to for quite some time. 📡 See more breaking news, local news and weather from WREG.com for Memphis and the Mid-South. 📧 Sign up for WREG newsletters and have the latest top stories sent right to your inbox. But, Tim Rook, who knows the area of Nutbush well, says he is not surprised. "Considering the frigid forecast, did not come as a surprise. The people are cold. They build fires in them," said Rook. A drastic dip in temperatures is possibly leading some to take drastic measures to stay warm. We reached out to the company that owns the home along Jamerson for more information. We have not yet heard back.
