VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The three former Virginia Beach Sheriff's Department deputies charged with second-degree murder in the death of Rolin Hill appeared in court by video Monday. Eric Baptiste, 39, also faces five counts of assault and battery and Michael Kidd, 39, has also been charged with two counts of assault and battery. Kevin Wilson, 34, faces just the second-degree murder charge. According to the medical examiner, Rolin Hill died of “positional and mechanical asphyxia due to restraint with neck and torso compression and ruled the death a homicide.”  Saturday at a vigil for Rolin Hill, his mother, Gail remembered a son who loved to take photos. Family and community members gather to remember Rolin Hill “Life is short," she said. "Spend time with your family, take a lot of pictures like you see right here. We would get ice cream and Rolin would say, ‘Take a picture. Take a picture. Come on take a picture.’“  At the Saturday vigil at Mount Trashmore, Rolin’s sister, Chane Hill, said, “Rolin, I love you, and I miss you so much. I know you always saw me as trying to be your mom. I promised that was me giving you tough love. I’m so proud of you. You saved four other people’s lives that day. That was you — the most selfless person I know."  Chane’s statement referred to what Rolin’s father said about him:  "He became a great hero on June 10, 2024, and Rolin was registered as an organ donor," said Stanley Hill. "He was an organ donor. LifeNet was able to find matches for my son’s heart, liver and two kidneys. He saved four lives immediately, so he is my hero." Stanley Hill remembers the day Rolin Hill was born. "Rolin was our first-born child," Stanley Hill said. "When he was born, I took him from Gail, and I was holding him until the doctor told me, 'Mr. Hill, I think you need to pass your son back to your wife. I was a very proud father on that precious day.'”  Chane Hill also said about Rolin Hill: “You were just misunderstood and had so much love to give to others and wanted others to love you. These past months have shown just how much people love you. You just could not see it."  The NAACP is greatly concerned about what happened to Rolin Hill.  "It’s really important," said Dr. Eric Majette, president of the Virginia Beach NAACP, in giving a call to action at Saturday's vigil. "Don't just stop here. We want to make sure this doesn't happen to another family. No family should have to go through this type of tragedy. Law Enforcement suppose to be protecting us."  Said Gail Hill: "Life is short. Spend time with your family even when you are upset with them because that does happen and continue to pray for us — pray for us to get justice."   In a statement from Baptiste's attorney, Brian Latuga, he said that "our deepest condolences go out to the Hill family for their loss. Mr. Baptiste had an exemplary career dedicated to serving and protecting this community and the inmates who are incarcerated within it; he desires justice as much as anyone else. He has been wrongfully accused of a horrendous crime from apparent actions while performing his sworn duties. We ask the public to withhold judgment upon Mr. Baptiste as the legal process takes place. We are confident that the evidence will clear his name of wrongdoing in the unfortunate death of Mr. Hill.
