EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The UTEP and New Mexico State men's basketball teams will go head-to-head in an important Conference USA game at the Don Haskins Center on Saturday night. Both the UTEP and New Mexico State MBB’s teams head into next Saturday’s Battle of I-10 meeting 2-0 in CUSA play.UTEP & NMSU are the only 2-0 teams in CUSA right now. Both UTEP and New Mexico State went undefeated in the opening weekend of Conference USA play and hold a 2-0 record in league play. Both teams are also above .500 and are on winning streaks. UTEP and New Mexico State are the only two teams in the league that hold a 2-0 CUSA record at this point of the season. Kennesaw State is 1-0 and will play Middle Tennessee on Thursday. The winner of Saturday's game will sit on top of the Conference USA standings. UTEP (12-3, 2-0 CUSA) UTEP is off to one of its best starts in program history. The 12-3 mark continues the best beginning to a campaign in 14 years while the 9-0 slate at home is the best since 2019-20. UTEP started CUSA play with a win over LA Tech, the CUSA preseason favorite, last Thursday at the Don Haskins Center. Then on Saturday, UTEP played its way to an 81-72 win over Sam Houston, a team picked to finish third in the CUSA preseason poll, at the Don Haskins Center. With the win over Sam Houston, UTEP extended its winning streak to six games. Otis Frazier III is UTEP's leading scorer as he is averaging 13.9 points per game. Fraizer III also leads the team in assists with 3.2 assists per game. Kevin Kalu leads the team in rebounding with 4.1 rebounds per game. Corey Camper Jr. is the team's leader in steals with 2.5 steals per game. As a team, UTEP leads the nation in steals (11.6 per game) and turnovers forced (18.9 per game). Two days later, NMSU absolutely dominated LA Tech, 78-48, at the Pan American Center to improve to 2-0 in league play. With the win over LA Tech, New Mexico State extended its winning streak to five games. NMSU's leading scorer is Christian Cook. The guard is averaging 15.2 points per game. Both Robert Carpenter and Peter Filipovity are averaging 11.5 points per game. Filipovity and Carpenter are also the team's leading rebounders. Filipovity is averaging 5.1 rebounds per game and Carpenter is averaging 4.4 rebounds per game. As a team, New Mexico State is averaging 74.8 points per game.
