CPD makes arrest in deadly shooting of Columbia teen

Columbia, SC (WOLO) — The Columbia Police Department has arrested a man accused of shooting and killing a Columbia teenager. Authorities say 37 year old Marcus J. Chaplin has been charged in connection to the deadly shooting of a 17 year old on Truman Street last month.
Police tell us the incident took place just after 4am December 29, 2024 when they received a Shotspotter alert from the 3100 block of Truman Street which was later determined to be a “shooting hit”. Officials say Chaplin is accused of confronting the 17 year old while he was in a resident’s yard after police say Chalin learned of a recent relationship the teen was in with someone only described as his ” loved one”.
CPD says when Chaplin confronted the teen he’s accused of shooting him multiple times. That victim was pronounced dead on scene.
Chaplin who is housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center is charged with Murder and Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime.
